WHO is still considering genetically modified mosquitoes in malaria control - Robert Newman

The World Health Organization (WHO) has revealed that it is still considering genetically modified mosquitoes as a control measure in the control of malaria. The director of WHO's Global Malaria Programme, Dr. Robert Newman stated this in an exclusive chat with HealthNewsNG.

While several researches are currently underway in different parts of the world, he said the organization has not received any submission for policy consideration.
"There are several researches currently going on but we don’t have any research that has submitted to us for policy consideration," Newman told HealthNewsNG.

For effective control of malaria, he said innovations such as genetically modified mosquitoes should all be considered.

He said: "Innovation is important in fighting any disease. Part of the fight against malaria is to be steps ahead of the parasite and ahead of the mosquito. I think scientific innovation and new approaches are needed such as a new vector control such as genetically modified mosquitoes."

"Will it be a vaccine or drugs that work in a different way? But what I know is we always win things by being innovative."
