Reduction in HIV prevalence in Nigeria is slowest in the world, says new report

Nigeria is currently behind Lesotho, DR Congo, Cote d'Ivoire, Chad and Angola on the list of the nations of the world with slow declining HIV infection rates.

This was contained in a report entitled "The  2013 Progress Report On the Global Plan Towards the Elimination of  New HIV Infections Among Children by 2015 and  Keeping Their Mothers Alive".

According to the report, Botswana has the most rapid decline of HIV infection  followed by Ethiopia, Ghana, Malawi, Namibia, South Africa and Zambia.

For Nigeria, the report said the number of HIV infections among children aged 0-14 and women aged 18-49 has declined very slowly and the rate of childhood infections with HIV has reduced from 65,000 in 2009 to 60,000 in 2012 representing a decrease of about 8 per cent.
