Indications have emerged that Nigeria may not be able to achieve the goal of totally eradicating polio this year as a result of several challenges such insecurity in the north and migration.
According to David Ross, immediate past head of the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), security and several other issues are militating against the total eradication of polio in Nigeria.
“I think that Nigeria is on course
to eradicating polio completely although there are some challenges,
particularly given the security situation in parts of the north and the
movement of population which affects the spread of the virus," Ross said.
He was speaking at a send-off party held in his honor by the Minister of Health, Prof Onyebuchi Chukwu in Abuja. According to him, Nigeria needs to double its annual investment in the health sector from US$11 million to US$22 million.
Last year, Prof Onyebuchi Chukwu, Nigeria's health minister, expressed the commitment of the government towards the eradication of polio this year.
"I hope that by next year
(2013), we will tackle it and maybe we will be the ones accusing other nations
of being the ones holding the world back in the eradication of the disease
(polio) as they are now accusing Nigeria of doing," Chukwu said.
