Nigeria can tackle hepatitis through NHIS - NMA

Dr. Osahon Enabulele, president of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has stated that Nigeria can reduce the incidence of hepatitis through the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) through which infected individuals could have access to more affordable treatments - especially for individuals with liver cancer and liver failure.

In a statement issued by the association to mark this year's' World Hepatitis Day, the NMA president said the incidence of hepatitis is high in Nigeria because many people are uninformed or poorly enlightened about the life-threatening disease.

"These viruses therefore constitute a major global health risk with around 240 million people said to be chronically infected with Hepatitis B and about 150 million people chronically infected with Hepatitis C," Enabulele said.
