A senior lecturer at the department of medicine and surgery, University of Port Harcourt, Dr. Bassey Fiebai has decried the plight of people living with HIV/AIDS in Rivers States. According to him, the stigmatization is still strong despite efforts by various agencies to eradicate stigmatization of people living with HIV/AIDS in the state.
Fiebai disclosed this while speaking at a health awareness campaign organized by Total E&P, a major oil company. On the campaign train that reached Eneka and Rukpokwu communities in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, the senior lecturer also revealed that the incidence of HIV infection is rising among the youths in the state.
He added that out of the estimated 4 million Nigerians that are living with the virus, about 10 per cent (400,000) are in Rivers state. He added that the prevalence of HIV is higher in the state than the entire country since the latest figures released by the World Health Organization (WHO) revealed that 8 per cent of Nigerians are infected with HIV.
