The World Health Organization (WHO) has described violence against women as a global health problem of epidemic proportions. This was contained in a new report released by the global health body in collaboration with the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and the South African Medical Research Council.
In the report entitled Global and regional estimates of violence against women:
Prevalence and health effects of intimate partner violence and
non-partner sexual violence, WHO said 35% of all women will experience either intimate partner or non-partner violence.
It added that intimate partner violence is the most common type of violence against women, affecting 30% of women worldwide.
“These findings send a powerful message that violence against
women is a global health problem of epidemic proportions.
"We also see that the world’s
health systems can and must do more for women who experience violence,”said Dr Margaret Chan, Director-General, WHO
