Nigerian Medical Practitioners At The Center Of Controversy Surrounding Death Of Pregnant Woman In London

Two Nigerian medical professionals, Chinyere Inyama, a coroner, and Dr Babatunde Coker, a senior surgical consultant are at the center of investigations into the death of a pregnant woman in London.

The pregnant mother of 3 was admitted in a London hospital last October for stomach pains but died after two trainee surgeons mistakenly removed her ovary instead of the appendix.

In what the husband described as a “litany of errors”, he revolted and is planning to sue the Hospital even after the Chief executive of the Hospital trust have accepted liability and apologized to the family. He maintained that his wife’s life could have been saved.

“My wife’s death could have been prevented, I am sure of it. By the time they realized how serious the situation was - and they promised us all the best consultants, it was too late.” He said.

An inquest heard at the coroner’s court showed that laboratory investigations performed on the extracted tissue suggested that it was one of her ovaries and not her appendix that was excised during the botched operation on October, 31. However, the mistake was discovered on November 9, when she was readmitted to the hospital. She later developed severe sepsis as a result of the appendicitis and died from multiple organ failure.

The Coroner, Chinyere Inyama said 'a lost window of opportunity' could have saved Mrs De Jesus.

The General Medical Council is currently investigating eight medical staff, including a senior surgical consultant, Dr Babatunde Coker, regarding the incident.
