Nigerian Government Set To Ban Tobacco Smoking

Nigerian government has revealed that it will ban smoking in the country as soon as the anti-tobacco bill that is currently before the lawmakers is passed into law. This was revealed yesterday by Nigeria's health minister, Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu.

According to him, the government decided to send the bill to the National Assembly because of the realization of the dangers inherent in continual cigarette smoking.

“Why are you smoking? Why are you taking what will kill you? What benefit do you derive from smoking?” the minister asked rhetorically.

According to him, the Nigerian government has decided to take drastic actions in the fight against smoking in Nigeria.

Concerning the success of the present administration in the health sector, the minister said National Trauma Centers have been established at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital and the National Hospital, Abuja. He also mentioned the completion of Federal Staff Hospital, Jabi, Abuja, laboratory and administrative building of the Nigerian Institute of Pharmaceutical Research and Development (NIPRD), Abuja, and rehabilitation and equipping of several teaching hospitals across Nigeria.

"Today in Nigeria, seven of our teaching hospitals can do kidney transplant. This month, we are expecting International Certification Team on the Elimination of Guinea Worm in Nigeria," the minister said.
