Nigerian Resident Doctors Set To Commence Nationwide Strike Tomorrow

Nigerian doctors under the aegis of the National Association of Resident Doctors of Nigeria (NARD) will tomorrow commence a three-day warning strike as directed by the national body which is accusing the federal government of not taking the issue of residency training serious in Nigeria.

The decision to embark on the strike was reached two weeks ago at the end of an ordinary session of the NARD. Speaking to newsmen, the association's president, Dr. Ismail Lawal said the funds approved for residency training in the 2013 federal budget would not be enough. He added that the goal of the three-day warning strike is to press home the demand of the association for more funds for residency training.

“NARD has directed her members to embark on a 3 day warning strike commencing from Wednesday 26th of June 2013 to show our dissatisfaction at the unbecoming attitude of the federal government to the issue of residency training funding and the failure to yield to our demand for the supplementary budget for the training,” he said.

The association has also called for the immediate suspension of the Chief Medical Director of Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, Prof. George Akpede who they said is guilty of "acts of mischief, insubordination and impersonation which amount to gross misconduct and which is not expected of a chief executive.”

NARD revealed that the CMD failed to acknowledge and abide by the numerous peaceful moves at resolving the lingering crisis at the institution, as evidenced by his fresh call for a legal battle.

The association added that if its conditions are not satisfactorily met before the end of July, its members may embark on an indefinite strike action.

  3. They are being over pamperd. They behave so childish as if they are university student who will forcefully demand for whatsoever they want and get it.Right nw,is not increment in salary but sometin......else.what abt other health professioners who are nt being given anytin yet they are permanent staff of the hospital. The reason for their misdemeanor resulted from the fact that right from the ministry of health.chief medical directors, medical directors and commissioner's position all occupy by doctors.whateva arrogant and stupid action they exhibit is treated as father son relationship at the end of the day. They feel very secured wheneva they want to misbehave.the people who are supposed to punish them is their father so what will u expect?Am of the opinion that government should as a matter of urgency look into these positions and put an end to this father son relationship in our hospitals as it is not so in other part of the world.
