Nigerian Government Tackles Maternal Mortality By Recruiting 2,000 Midwives

Nigerian government has said it plans to improve the quality of healthcare at the rural areas. According to the Executive Director of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr Ado Mohammed, the government will achieve this by recruiting 2,000 more midwives through the Midwives Service Scheme (MSS).

He explained that the government introduced MSS as an ongoing programme to address the menace of maternal mortality in the country.

He added that the government has already carried out the redeployment of about 4,300 midwives to rural areas across Nigeria.

According to the director, MSS has been implemented in about 1,500 health centres, while community health officers are undergoing training to complement and assist the midwives.

“We also recruited some women and built their capacities to provide some basic services in their communities. The Federal Government is committed to ensuring that we meet the MDGs target of eradicating maternal mortality.

“We are working with the state and Local Governments, to put Nigeria on track in achieving the MDGs target of eradicating maternal mortality in the country,” he said.
