Nelson Mandela Hospitalized for Lung infection

President Nelson Mandela who has been ill for some time was on Friday taken to a hospital in Pretoria at about 01:30 local time from his home in a suburb of Johannesburg. He has been ill for some time but his condition suddenly exacerbated prior to his transfer to the Hospital.

The presidential spokesman, Mac Maharaj said he was in a serious but stable condition and is receiving expert medical care.

It would be recalled that President Mandela became the first black president of South Africa after his release from prison for his political struggles against Apartheid. It is believed that his lung problem emanated from activities carried out during his long years of detention probably from working in the prison quarry.

He is a greatly loved leader in South Africa where he is taken as symbol of hope and reconciliation.
