Mental healthcare service is inadequate in Nigeria - psychiatrists

The Association of Psychiatrists in Nigeria (APN) has decried the shortage of mental healthcare facilities in Nigeria.

The association has therefore advocated for the incorporation of mental health care services into primary and secondary health care facilities in the country.

In a communique issued at the end of the association's 44th Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference held in Calabar on Monday, the psychiatrists enjoined the lawmakers to speedily pass the mental health bill into law.

They said it provide a framework for the implementation of the National Mental Health Policy.

They also decried the poor child-related social indicator in Nigeria; they emphasized its adverse implications for children's mental health and well-being.

"We call for more participation in military training programmes by mental health practitioners as well as collaboration between civilians and the military," APN said.

It also made case for military manpower capacity building in mental healthcare.
