Policies And Politics Are Militating Against Healthcare In Nigeria - Gov Fayemi

The executive governor of Ekiti state, Dr. Kayode Fayemi has blamed inconsistent policies and lack of political commitment to health issues as part of the problems facing healthcare in Nigeria. Fayemi stated this while delivering the 8th Prof. Olikoye Ransome-Kuti Lecture in Lagos.

In his lecture titled “Tackling the Challenge of Health and Social Inequity in Ekiti State", he also noted that infrastructural decay, politicization of the health, lack of appropriate constitutional and legal frameworks and declining professionalism among others, are the challenges that the health sector in Nigeria is facing.

"Till date, a lot of initiatives have been designed and implemented for the improvement of the health of the population. However, the structural inequity that is the main bane of many health initiatives still persists,” Fayemi said.

According to him, improving the health sector and tackling social inequity that are the causes of marginalization should be the focus of the government in order to ensure that more Nigerians contribute to national development.

The 8th Professor Olikoye Ransome Kuti Lecture organized by the Women’s Health and Action Research Centre (WHARC) and was attended by stakeholders in the health sector including the chairman of the event, Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka who was represented by his son Dr. Olaogun Soyinka, Commissioner for Health of Ogun State, Dr. Adewale Omirin, Hon. Speaker, Ekiti State House of Assembly, Dr. Tokunbo Awolowo-Dosunmu, Chairman, the founding Chairman of WHARC’s Board of Trustees (BOT), Lady Winifred Onyeonwu (JP), current BOT Chairman of WHARC, ND Mr. Innocent Chukwuma, West African Representative of the Ford Foundation.
