According to him, only federal government workers are currently covered by the National health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
He stated this in Ibadan while speaking at an event organized by the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) Oyo State chapter, held at Trenchard Hall, University of Ibadan.
Speaking on the theme "The National Health Insurance Scheme, which way forward?” he said Nigeria needs to embrace community health insurance scheme.
“Community health insurance scheme captures everybody, even those in the farms because it is community oriented and it is captures every household,” he said.
He added that “the community is where over 70 per cent of Nigeria population is and until we get this population on we will still be tailing behind in comparison with other countries in the world.”
He blamed the poor acceptance of health insurance on poor understanding.
He said: “Most of the challenges we are facing are borne out of the fact that most people don’t understand what health insurance stands for."
