International Youth Day - WHARC resurrects Fela's legacies

Yesterday in the ancient city of Benin city, Edo state, Nigeria, the Women’s Health and Action Research Centre (WHARC) celebrated this year's International Youth Day with an event through which it sought to mainstream Nigerian youths into the development and social change agenda of the country.

At the event, the MD/CEO of The New Afrika Shrine and daughter of the late Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, Ms. Yeni Kuti delivered a lecture on "Understanding Fela, his music and message to the Youth”

In a statement made available to HealthNewsNG, WHARC said the topic was chosen "to create awareness among youths on the need to rejuvenate the country along the best traditions of principled Africanism as espoused by Fela."

Also at the event, prizes were awarded to winners of an essay competition on the theme "what governments should do for youth”. It also featured the launching of WHARC Youth Forum.

The annual International Youth Day was established by the United Nations in 1999, to raise awareness about youth issues, especially about the need for countries to invest in youth development.
