Misconceptions and ignorance have been identified as the strongest barriers militating against blood transfusion service in Akwa Ibom state.
As the free medical mission in Nto Edino, Akwa Ibom state which HealthNewsNG.com is covering enters its third day today, a healthcare professional who is a member of the team said relatives are scared of donating blood to save the lives of their loved ones due to the numerous misconceptions and high rate of ignorance on what blood transfusion is all about in the community.

Chris Njoku, a medical laboratory scientist said: "Most members of the community are finding it very difficult if not impossible to donate their blood to save the lives of their sick relatives. Their refusal is due to so much misconceptions and ignorance about the issue of blood donation."
According to him, residents of the community are refusing to donate even to their relatives who are very aneamic and in dire need of transfusion.
