Mexico Is The New World's Fattest Nation

The United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has announced that Mexico has overtaken United States of America and has become the new world's fattest nation.

According to the FAO report, about 33 per cent of the Mexico are suffering from obesity compared to USA which only has about 32 per cent suffering from the weight disorder.

In a report issued by the organization, it said the high rate of obesity in Mexico is as a result of industrialized agriculture. FAO also blamed explosion in the number of food chains and the low cost of junk food meals.

While the overweight issue in Mexico is just getting global attention, it has been widespread since the 1980s and experts believe it coincided with the introduction of processed food into much of the Mexican food market.

The Mexican government has also taken several steps to address the weight challenge with the latest being the  Measure yourself and activate campaign spearheaded by the Mexican Football Federation.

Latest figures show more than 70 per cent of the population are suffering from overweight while 1 in 6 are suffering from diabetes.
