Lagos government enlightens residents on coronavirus

Lagos state government has enjoined residents to be conscious of the coronavirus which has claimed more than 80 lives in the Middle East.

Although the virus has not been detected in Nigeria, the state’s commissioner for health, Dr. Jide Idris, has advised residents to take measures aimed at protecting them from contracting the virus.

In a statement, Idris said the virus that infects the upper respiratory and gastrointestinal tract of mammals and birds could to a large extent be prevented by taking proper environmental and personal hygiene measures.

He also disclosed that 5 zoonotic strains of the virus have been identified and studies are currently ongoing to elucidate upon its mode of transmission although it has been documented that an individual’s risk of contracting the virus is significantly increased when there is a close bodily contact with an already infected individual through through sneezing, coughing and handshake.

He said: “Coronavirus has been detected in some parts of the world recently. There is no specific treatment for any illnesses caused by the virus. Most people will recover on their own and they may require supportive treatment, which includes staying at home, resting and drinking a lot of fluids. However, serious cases will need special medical care.”

He therefore enjoined Nigerian pilgrims to Saudi Arabia to ensure they are immunized against meningitis, yellow fever and flu; and adhere to necessary preventive measures.

He also advised the state’s healthcare workforce to take protective measures to prevent being infected at work; he also charged them to report suspected cases to the nearest local government, council development area or the state health ministry.
