Nigerian government sacks resident doctors

Nigerian government yesterday (Thursday) announced indefinite suspension of residency training programme for doctors in the country.


According to a circular issued by the Federal Ministry of Health and sent to the Chief Medical Directors (CMD) of Nigeria's federal tertiary hospitals.

"The Honorable Minister has directed that you issue letters of termination of Residency Training appointment to the affected Resident Doctors in your Hospital immediately," the statement said.

According to the statement, the board of management has been directed to take all necessary measures to immediately restore full medical services in their hospital. The minister said the hospitals can employ locum physicians on six months renewable contract tied to productivity and good behavior.
