The Jigawa State Ministry of Health has urged people of the state to embank on environmental sanitation exercise to curtail the spread of contagious diseases.
The ministry's public relations officer, Malam Najib Umar, said the call became imperative in view of the condition arising from the poor environment.
He pointed out that the transition period between the dry and rainy season was critical, while advising people to avoid using pond or pool water.
He said though over 80 per cent of the people in the state have potable water, certain unhygienic practices may result in contamination of the sources.
He also advised the people to always wash their hands with soap after defecation and before handling food or any other edible materials, as well as safe preparation and conservation of food.
According to him, cases of malaria and diarrhoeal diseases often increase during the period, urging people to ensure clean environment and endeavour to clear debris and stagnant water from their areas of habitation.
Besides, he called for collaboration between all stakeholders in ensuring the safety of lives and livestock.
He also extended the ministry's appreciation to the people of the state on the support being offered to the health sector towards achieving the core MDG goals.
