JUTH suspends 5 over unionism, workers embark on strike

The management of the Jos University Teaching Hospital has suspended health workers at the hospital for participating in union activities. The suspended workers include five Medical Laboratory Scientists including the hospital's most Senior Medical Laboratory Scientist.

According to a reliable source who spoke to HealthNewsNG.com under condition of anonymity, the workers were suspended by the hospital for their involvement in union affairs. Two of the affected workers - Dr. Opajobi and Mr Emmanuel are staff of the microbiology department while the other three, Mrs Sheni, Mr Obisesan and Mr Bala Dennis (President of the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria, JUTH chapter), are staff of the Haematology department.

The source also told HealthNewsNG.com that two medical laboratory interns also had their appointments terminated for their active involvement in the activities of the union. The affected interns were initially served with queries which they failed to reply within the stipulated time.

The affected scientists had their ID cards withdrawn and instruction was given to the hospital security officers to prevent them from entering the hospital premises. The suspension which took effect on Monday is said to be indefinite as no time was stated in their letters for date of resumption.

As at time of filing this report, other health workers in the hospital are on strike and less activity reported within the hospital.
