460 indigents have benefited from free surgeries organized by Kanu Heart Foundation within the foundation's 13 years of existence, authorities of the foundation have revealed.
Speaking at a press briefing held in Lagos, Mr. Abia Onyebuchi, coordinator of the foundation said the ages of the beneficiaries are between 1 and 12 years.
He added that beneficiaries above 12 years of age were enlisted after paying a discounted price.
He decried the rise in the number of Nigerian children requiring serious surgeries and urged the Nigerian government to develop more interest in revamping the nation's health sector.
“We have got to a stage where the federal government should declare a state of emergency in the sector.
“The way and manner these innocent
children get heart-related diseases are becoming alarming. As of
yesterday, we had about 40 cases relating to this and, so far, we have
spent several millions of naira on these sick children,” he said.
