International organizations including the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Commonwealth at the 67th World Health Assembly (WHA) have expressed great concern over the rising activities of extremists in Nigeria, they said it posed grave danger health delivery in the country.
They said the continued activities of terrorists in Nigeria could halt immunization programmes in the affected areas since health workers who render these services will be restricted as a result of the current state of emergency rule in these areas.
Commenting on this crisis, Nigeria's Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, said “no meaningful development can take place in the absence of peace and socio-political stability.” as a result on the continued unrest.
He said: “Although not a direct mandate of health, but because it posed serious threats on the performance of the health sector and increases the burden of health problems, the issue of security and conflict resolutions must be addressed in the post 2015 agenda.”
"Already, terrorism, communal strife and civil wars have combined to present enormous challenges to the health of populations of various countries around the world,” there is need for member states to consider security as a key component in the provision of better healthcare service delivery.
