Population Council is today (Wednesday) holding a
national multi-stakeholder event on Walking the Talk Youth-friendly HIV
programs and services in Nigeria. The virtual event will be held on Facebook and
Twitter social media platforms.
"The national multi-stakeholder
dialogue session will focus on bringing together Nigerian youth, researchers,
policy makers/program managers, and donor agencies with experience working on
sexual and reproductive realth (SRH) and HIV-related issues among youth (15-24)
to discuss how HIV programs and services should be and are being shaped to be
more youth-friendly in Nigeria," a member of the organizing team told HealthNewsNG.com.
"The panelists will highlight
current gaps, present evidence on new solutions; share their individual
perspectives on how to reach this diverse population, and next steps of action
for their organization. The session also aims to mobilize young people to
advocate for youth friendly HIV programs and services and will enable them to
network amongst themselves and with other HIV and AIDS stakeholders," she said.
She said social media was selected as the right platform because it provides access to diverse populations.
"As at 2012, Facebook has about
1 billion active users which makes it a perfect platform to reach diverse
populations, and we know young people have carved their own niche in the social
media," she said.
"We want the young people to hold our stakeholders accountable in
programs and policy development for young people, young people need to take
ownership is of this process."
