Health workers at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital (LAUTECH), Osogbo, Nigeria yesterday (Wednesday) embarked on an indefinite strike to protest the deductions and outstanding salaries of five months.
As a result of the strike, patients on admission at the hospital have been informed to leave the wards and seek medical service elsewhere until further notice, as the resolution of the industrial dispute between the workers, including National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) and other unions had been stalemated.
Before commencing the strike, leaders of the industrial unions in the hospital held a congress with all the workers at the frontage of the administration building of the hospital, before ordering their members to down tools.
Some patients were sighted being taken outside the hospital complex by their relatives, with a view to seeking medical attention in private hospitals in Osogbo, the capital of Osun State and other major towns.
According to the letter written by the Joint Negotiation Council (JNC) of Unions, the umbrella body for National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Medical Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN), Nigerian Union of Allied Health Professionals (NUAHP), (NASU) and (SSA), they said the strike was called since the hospital management was unable to meet their demands.
It said: “having critically and extensively examined the issues at hand, at a meeting held on April 14, 2014, we noted with regrets, the inability of the management to meet the deadline on our demands.”
“The Joint Negotiation Council (JNC) hereby declares a total and indefinite strike action, which commences by 8.00 a.m on Wednesday, April 16, 2014.”
