State in Nigeria records 153 new cases of cholera in 2014

11 persons were killed by cholera outbreak in Jigawa, the state commissioner for health Dr Abubakar Tafida, has said.


This is contained in a statement signed by Malam Mati Ali, the Public Relations Officer in the state Ministry of Health on Thursday in Dutse.

The statement said that a total of 153 cholera cases were reported in the state from Jan, 1 to date. It added that only four people died at the hospital while the remaining seven died at home.

The statement said that the cholera cases were reported in Taura, Birnin Kudu, Garki, Ringim, Babura and Gwaram local government areas of the state.

It added that the situation was currently under control.

The statement said that the National Centre for Disease Control has donated drugs and other medical supplies to the state government for the control and treatment of the disease.

The statement said that the Federal Ministry of Health has set up a seven- member technical team to inspect all the affected local government areas, conduct a rapid assessment, analysis and review the situation to enable rapid interventions to forestall further spread of the disease.
