Doctors warn against uncertified mobile health tips

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has warned members of the public to be cautious about mobile health tips that are not certified. Such messages it said could be dangerous and misleading.

According to the president of the association, Dr. Osahon Enabulele the unregulated text messages are originating from various unknown individuals or group who urge people to subscribe to monthly health tips. He said the sole purpose of some of the messages is for business and not to inform people.

He said: "Anything that is not regulated falls short of the health principles and code and should not be encouraged. Unregulated health messages sent by this groups should not be accepted until it's within medical regulation.
"These messages will harm people's healthy living, they are nonprofessionals in health care. There are some pieces of information that needs screening before being sent or should not be sent out at all," he said.
Enabulele said, those found guilty of sending such messages should be cautioned.
"The point is that, it is not regulated in Nigeria and this can be enhanced if it is regulated in line with the accepted medical ethics," he said.
