MLSCN tackles substandard diagnostics with new control laboratory

Nigeria's President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan will today (September 5, 2013) commission the Public Health In Vitro Diagnostics Control Laboratory (PHIVDCL) established by the Medical Laboratory Council of Nigeria (MLSCN).

The laboratory, according to the MLSCN is part of the council's efforts aimed at sanitizing the diagnostics polity.

Presently, the council said more than 50 per cent of the diagnostic kits in the Nigerian open market are substandard, counterfeit, expired or poorly stored.
In a statement made available to newsmen, Prof Anthony Emeribe, Registrar and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the MLSCN said the council is set to ensure fake and substandard products are no longer sold in Nigeria.

“It will no longer be business as usual for manufacturers and distributors of fake and substandard in vitro diagnostic kits, equipment, reagents and consumables as the MLSCN has taken another huge step to sanitize the sector," he said.
“In pursuance of this goal, the President, Commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan (GCFR) will on September 5, 2013 (today) commission the PHIVDCL. The Chief Host of the event, which is expected to mark a turning point in the country’s quest for quality medical laboratory services, will be the Hon. Minister of Health, Prof Onyebuchi Chukwu”
He also said intimated during the statement that a policy aimed at ensuring that only quality medical laboratory kits, equipment, reagents and consumables that meet international standards would be allowed to be distributed in the country has also been mapped out by the MLSCN.

He said: “This is part of MLSCN's efforts to upscale the quality of medical laboratory services in the country and also part of its regulatory functions as enunciated in constitution”
