To enhance institutional strengthening for sustainability, the Nigerian
and United States of America Centers for Disease Control have empowered
the University of Ibadan and Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria with about
11 million naira worth of public health books.
The presentation was in response to the Nigeria Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Program in building a sustainable network of highly skilled field epidemiologists, veterinarians and laboratory managers to improve public health services.
Speaking yesterday in Abuja at the presentation of the learning journals, Country Director in Nigeria, US CDC, Dr. Okey Nwanyanwu said the donation is an investment in learning and capacity of “books everywhere” reading culture.
He stressed the importance of promoting access to published journals beyond universities for competence building.
Nwanyanwu said the support for the book donation was through the US CDC through the U.S President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief funding and U.S Department of State, Biosecurity Engagement Programme.
Project Director, Nigeria Centers for Disease Control, Prof. Abdulsalami Nasidi noted that the modern public health books on epidemiology, statistics, zoonoses, laboratory and environment will be shared by both universities.
In his words, “we are giving these books out to universities to make sure that their libraries are up to date and to use them to encourage the new generation of Nigerian public health care workers and scientists.”
