Nigeria's president, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has conferred on Bill Gates, Co-Chairman of Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Commander of the Federal Republic national award. Gates is recognised for his efforts in Nigeria's fight against polio.
President Jonathan announced this at a forum on the Presidential Task
Force on Polio Eradication put together by the Federal Ministry of
Health, held at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa Abuja. He said in addition to the health sector, Gates is also supporting Nigeria in other areas including agriculture.
He said: “Apart from supporting us in the fight against Polio and provision of
life saving commodities he (Gates) is also assisting us in agriculture.
“As the President and Commander in Chief I hereby confer on Bill Gates,
one of our prestigious titles, the Commander of the Federal Republic.
His decoration will come up during the award ceremony in December”, he
said.
In related news, Gates has expressed satisfaction with the level of commitment of Nigeria in polio eradication. He said this at a meeting with the leadership of the Nigerian House of Representatives.
“The goal of saving lives is a very realistic goal. Through these
efforts I do think that children who do survive will be far healthier
and able to take advantage of their education and contribute to the
success of Nigeria,” Gates said.
