The United Nations' Population Fund (UNFPA) has announced the donation of equipments and commodities worth about $6.2 million to Nigeria's National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA).
In a statement issued by Kori Habib, Press Officer of UNFPA Nigeria, the donated items will be handed over to NPHCDA today (Tuesday) in Lagos for onward distribution to 6 Nigerian states.
She revealed that the benefiting states are Lagos, Kebbi, Cross River, Kaduna, Adamawa and Ebonyi states.
According to the UNFPA, the donation is a demonstration of the existing government and development partners' commitment to scale up access to life-saving commodities that would reduce maternal mortality.
"This intervention is a demonstration of government and development partners' commitment to scale up access to life-saving commodities that are necessary to accelerate reduction in maternal death," UNFPA said in the statement.
Victoria Akyeampong, UNFPA Resident Representative, urged government and development partners to demonstrate political will and invest more resources in increased access to maternal health services.
"Government and development partners must continue to demonstrate the political will and invest more resources to increase access to maternal health services through evidence-based interventions. This is critical because the lives of our women and young girls depend on it," she said.
