An expert has revealed that Nigerian doctors who are employed on contract basis are contending with job security and lack dedication.
The immediate past chairman, Medical Guild, Lagos State branch, Dr Olumuyiwa Odusote, said this in Lagos, Nigeria while speaking at the guild's Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference.
He enjoined governments to stop employing doctors as contract staff.
"Stop employing doctors as contract staff, this creates job
insecurity and lack of dedication as these jobs are used as temporary
employment until a better permanent job is secured, " he said.
He noted that the country is churning out professionals that become manpower for developed countries while the health sector in the country lays comatose in spite of high gross revenue expenditure and worsening financial management by the governments.
Out of 65,000 registered medical practitioners in Nigeria, about 35,000 of them practise outside in foreign lands which he said has negative impact on nation's health sector.
He advised government at all levels to create better working environment and also improve remuneration for medical doctors in order to reflect the current economic realities within the community, state, nation and the entire world.
Reacting to the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Odusote said, some people believe that the scheme has failed while others believe that it is the way to go "but one thing remain incontrovertible, that is the fact that Nigerians continue to die for inability to pay for healthcare services as at when due. Which way Nigerians?, he asked.
“The bottom line is, how can we stop this dangerous slide and return the train to an upward movement,” he averred.
