The Nigerian Heart Foundation (NHF) has enjoined Nigerians to make heart-friendly choices in everything they choose to do and eat. According to the foundation, threats to the heart can occur at an early age. The foundation stated this in Lagos at an exhibition of heart healthy brands
to encourage consumers make hea1thy food choices.
According to Dr. Femi Bolaji Lawal, NHF Vice chairman, most forms of heart diseases could be prevented by taking some simple precautionary steps.
He said: "The main
aim [of the exhibition] is to educate people and alert them that the threat of
heart disease can begin at an early age, and that most heart diseases and
stroke can be prevented by making healthy lifestyle changes: eating healthily,
being active and avoiding exposure to tobacco smoke."
He stressed the importance of awareness and paying attention in the fight against heart diseases.
“Awareness is the first step to a
healthy heart. Paying attention to how much we walk should be as simple as
watching what we eat. We are urging people to take action to protect their
hearts. By reaching the recommended guideline of minimum 30 minutes of moderate
exercise, which includes brisk walking at least five days a week, many
premature deaths can be prevented,” he said.
